Design Background
The Diego Maradona 30th Anniversary T-Shirt is headlined on the front of the T-shirt by an incredible image taken by News Corp photographer, Steve Moorhouse.
The image was taken on the 20th of October 1993, during a training session Wentworth Park. That’s right – Wentworth Park. The Venue known Australia wide as the home to Greyhound racing in Sydney!
The image itself is quintessential Maradona. Maradona positions himself in perfect alignment for an overhead kick. With another of his trademarks – laces undone. This is how Maradona always trained and warmed up. Laces undone. In his words ‘because I want to feel the ball on my feet better’. He would only tie them up just before kick-off.

On the back of the T-Shirt, is an iconic statement Diego Maradona made to Socceroos Captain Paul Wade, after Argentina defeated the Socceroos and won through to the 1994 World Cup Finals.
Paul Wade: “We went to a TV station, Raul Blanco and I. We were being interviewed; it was late that night. Maradona rings up and everyone’s going, ’What, seriously?’ He rang up and they put him to air,” Wade recounted. “ Diego said, ‘Congratulations on your performance, it was amazing. You almost knocked us out of the World Cup.
‘Your tears of sorrow today will be tears of joy sometime soon.’ It took until 2005 for that to happen, but I thought to myself, he was bothered enough to ring while we were live on air and say congratulations for your performance. I thought, there is a human side to this gigantic person.”
